I am human. My name is Shia.
All my life I have thought I had to prepare for my “future”. You know, all those things every parent tells their child. I went to school, to college, to grad school, even considered a PhD. Then I got an office job like a “proper adult”. And I was VERY disappointed. All the hard work, all the sacrifices to pimp my resume – for THAT?
So THIS is how life’s supposed to be until I retire? I felt like Bill Murry in Groundhog Day. I felt trapped, suffocated. So I quit my job. Without looking for another “proper” job. What’s the point anyway? Screw career, screw adulthood! Instead, I did something I had never done in my life: I waited tables! A weight had been lifted off my shoulders!
It has been 1 1/2 years since. And I don’t think I have ever achieved this much in my life before. My husband and I now live Zero Waste. (What you see in the picture is the amount of landfill waste my husband and I have generated in the last 3 months). We have been able to become vegans, and we are working on eliminating plastic and palmoil from our lives.
But most importantly: We are happy. We waste very little time on “work” and chores that we do not enjoy, but spend a lot of time with each other and things we love to do. (Contrary to popular belief we do not spend our days with making our own zero waste product replacements or running to all sorts of different places to buy in bulk :D) My friends think we’ve gone crazy, my mom thinks I’m embarrassing (I can remember when it used to be the other way around ;)), but at the end of the day that doesn’t matter. We are all humans, trying to find our place in life.
I have told you my story – what is yours?
